I had the pleasure of sitting in cyberspace with the College Pastor of Central, Mitch Eiler:
So, Mitch, why did you start blogging?
I started blogging as an effort to keep family
and friends back home in Indiana connected to what’s going on in my life out
here. I overlooked the fact many people back there still use
dial-up. I blog now as a means of external processing mostly, and
occasional discovered internet gold.
What blogs do you read? I read quite a few.
My blogroll is actually listed on my journal site. Ones of note are Donald Miller, Seth Godin, Tony Dungy, Rhett Smith, and Benson Hines What has social media helped you do that you either weren’t doing, or it helped you do better?
Social media has
helped me to do a number of things I wasn’t doing, but the biggest of which is
providing consistent and constant communication with my college students.
Facebook has become more than just a social networking tool but really more of
a of a “third place” (like the Starbucks concept). It’s the online
version of a place when you’re not at home or work your “there” so to speak.
It’s truly incredible.
What is CCCEV as an organization missing out on with social media? I think CCCEV is
missing out on the connection capabilities of new media. There are so
many options out there of ways to connect with your church community that have
yet to be deployed by the church, and the majority of them are free of
cost. I think as developments continue to come within new media, the
church will be presented with more and more opportunities to not just connect
with its community during the week, but also to reduce their overhead costs of
how we have operated to this point. Nothing will replace personal
interaction, but many things will replace the “follow-up card” of old. I
think new media will be that substitute for us soon. Or at least I hope
so!
What would you do if you could be invisible?
If I could turn
invisible I would people watch. This is actually something I do now, I
just wouldn’t have to try to be so secretive about it if I was invisible!
Here's a new series where I talk to some of Central's bloggers. This week we get to spend two minutes with Central's own Skippy:
So, Landon, why did you start blogging?
I started blogging because I like to write, and liked the opportunity to put some random thoughts down and share with community of other people doing the same thing.
What blogs do you read?
I read a lot of blogs - mostly the blogs of friends; but some like Donald Miller's blog as well.
What has social media helped you do that you either weren’t doing, or it helped you do better?
Social media forces me to write my own thoughts, and it forces me to "listen" in the form of reading to other people's thoughts/feelings.
What is CCCEV as an organization missing out on with social media?
People love blogs. More and more people are using them to communicate and connect with a myriad of people. By not connecting in the social media world - CCCEV is lagging behind and missing out on a growing potential audience.
What would you do if you could fly?
I would probably visit Alaska. I've always wanted to go, but don't exactly have the funds. Oh and I would probably stop using my car when I drive to Flagstaff on Mondays.
