Home Pay Off Spectacular Gone Wrong!!!!

Some time ago I began using budgeting tools from Joseph Sangl's website.   I highly recommend the Weekly Budget Form found here.

One of the tools he has is the Pay off spectacular where you graphically track your progress in paying off your house, car, iPhone, etc.

I thought I would do ours for our house.  That sound you hear is the housing bubble bursting:

The green is our equity in January of 2007.

The red is our negative equity in July 2008!

Planting a church on the Las Vegas strip

I just found out that Vince Antonucci of Forefront Church has announced that he is being sent out from Forefront to plant a church on the Las Vegas strip (see the announcement here).  Vince planted Forefront several years ago and was instrumental in leading Laurie and I to Arizona, even though he doesn't know us, aside from a couple of emails.  He has felt God's leading to leave a church that he loves and a place that his family loves to go to a place that has to be the most hostile place in America to start a church.

Interestingly, he also mentioned that he has perhaps not gifted to lead a church plant to the next level, that he is great for starting them and now it might be better for someone else to take Forefront to the next stage.  He's the second church planter I've seen this year that has thought that his baby needed someone with different gifting.  In February, Ben Arment posted this blog about why he was leaving the church he had planted.

Most church planting organizations have evaluate whether you have the gifts to be a church planter.  Maybe they need one that you take 7-10 years in to find out if you continue to be the pastor that your church needs.  Not everyone sees their reality like Vince and Ben.

I will be following Vince's move closely.  It should be fascinating.

My Top 5 Albums From the 80's

Just thinking about the cassettes I wore out in college:

5.  Synchronicity - The Police

4.  Diver Down - Van Halen

3.  The Game - Queen

2.  The Long Run - The Eagles

1.  Moving Pictures- Rush

Sure, it's all secular, because The Michael W. Smith Project didn't make the cut.

Newspring Launches Greenville Campus

One of my favorite churches-I-don't-go-to-but-like-to-follow-cause-they-do-cool-stuff just launched their second campus last weekend.  I have followed  Newspring Church in Anderson, SC for some time now, mainly because they broadcast their entire service on their web site.   They have been doing some cool things with songs and video, and Perry Noble is an easy guy to listen to.  And, of course, my favorite simply strategic guy, Tony Morgan, is their Chief Strategist.  See the mention I got on his blog here, and view the banner here.

Their Greenville, SC campus launched with 1,700 people in attendance, which was 700 more than hoped for.  There Anderson campus was up in attendance, which indicates they did a great job getting their people to buy into the multi-site model.

Creative Chaos - Rescue Rangers

Creative-chaos-1-1-tm
For our children's ministries VBS here at Central, the Children's team filmed a summer long series called "Rescue Rangers-The Edge of Adventure" (starring the lovely and talented Mesa Campus Children's Director Laurie Gibson as Ranger Granger).  Each week during the summer they showed an episode of their filming to build up excitement for VBS next week.  Then each night they will do a live drama that finishes off the story.  The series is based on the life of Gideon and it rocks!!!!  See the material here.

Plot Twists

So I got the report on "Hancock", this morning, after hearing about the plot twist in it, and it made me start thinking about other plot twists I know and love.  So, in no particular order, here are my top five:

  • "The Sixth Sense".  The was one of those rare movies where I wanted to sit through it again.  Kind of like I wanted to sit through "Liar, Liar", again but only for the boardroom scene.
  • "Planet of the Apes".  The original, with Charlton Heston, where he rides off with the girl who can't talk and finds the head of the Statue of Liberty sticking out of the sand, showing him that he had been on Earth all this time.
  • "The Shawshank Redemption".  I love that he escaped, even if I can never remember whether he was guilty or innocent.
  • "The Empire Strikes Back".  Saw it the other day.  One of the great moments in cinematic history:  "Luke, I am your father."
  • "Waterboy".  Who could have foreseen Adam Sandler returning to lead the way on the winning play of the game?

Happy Independence Day!

This is what we didn't see last night...

Fireworks
We had gone to watch our local fireworks show, and after a late start and a few isolated fireworks, it just stopped and people started to leave.  We couldn't see what was going on from where we were, so after a while we just left as well.

And you know what?  It didn't matter.

We went home and played spoons.
